Ten Russian Movies that shook the world. When making any kind of a list one can’t escape of putting some sort of a bias.  These movies translate well in English and are not misinterpreted by an western audience. In other words they are well understood without a deep knowledge of Russian culture.  There is an absolute masterpiece by Alexander Roy “Morozko” which is funny and delightful to Russian eyes and ears. Yet  western audience found it to be  almost a horror movie, gloomy and scary. In this list we will stick to classics that have universal themes.

 

1)    The Battleship Potemkin (Броненосец «Потёмкин») , Sergei Eisenstein 1920. If you went to a film school in US you know this title well.  First movie that implemented “montage” techniques, know widely known as post-production editing. 

 


2)    Man with a Movie Camera (Человек с киноаппаратом), Dziga Vertov. Black and white masterpiece exploring the limits of camera handling. Music score is fantastic. 

 


3) The Cranes are flying. (Летят Журавли).sdf


4)    White sun of the desert. (Белое солнце пустыни).


 


5)    Moscow don’t believe in tears.(Москва слезам не верит). If you were picking to see a movie today. This is it.
