Russian is considered to be one of the hardest languages to master. Yet
to get by in any language you need to know only around 300 words. Russian alphabet is fairly easy to learn. Once you master it, you will be able to read and pronounce Russian words even if you don't understand their meaning. Here is a Wikipedia article on Russian alphabet. We complied most common words and phrases that will get you going:
Privet - Hello, Hi. A universal informal greeting. Pronounced Preevét. Russian: Привет.
Poka - Bye, See you later. Pronounced Packá. Russian: Пока.
Da – Yes. Pronounced Duh. Russian: Да.
Net – No. Pronounced Niet. Most common Russian
word. Russian: Нет.
Zdravstvujte - Tongue twisting formal greeting. Pronounced Zdastujte.Russian: Здравствуйте.
Spasibo - Thank you. Pronounced Spasiba. Russian: Спасибо.
Ya – I, me, mine. Pronounced Ya . Russian: Я. Example: Ya Dmitry (My name is Dmitry ). Russian: Я Дмитрий. Example: Ya ushel (I am gone , I am leaving
) Russian: Я ушел.
Ya hochu … – I want… You can insert a verb or a noun after Ya hochu .
Example: Ya hochu pit’ ( I want to drink, I am thirsty ) Russian: Я хочу пить. Example: Ya hochu v kino (I want to go see movies). Russian: Я хочу в кино.
Ty – You. Russian: Tы. Pronounced: This vowel is absent in English. It
is made with your lower throat. It is the kind of a sound you would make while
trying to lift a piece of heavy machinery.
Horosho – good, well, can be used as yes when answering a question. Kak
dela ? –Horosho ( How are you ? Good. ) Хорошо
Ploho – bad. Russian: Плохо
Vse - all, everything. Russian: все. Example: Vse horosho ( Everything is good). все хорошо.
Nichevo - nothing. Russian: ничего
Chto (Pronounced Shto) - what, that. Russian: что. Example: Chto ty hochish ? - What do you want ? Russian: Что ты хочешь ? Example: Masha ponyala chto lyubit Pitera. Masha realized that she loves Peter. Russian: Маша поняла что любит Питера.
Skol'ko - how much. Сколько. Example: How much is it ? Сколько ето стоит ? Example: What time is it ? Сколько время ? Literally: how much time ? Kogda - when. Russian: Когда.
Kak - how. Russian: Как.
Gde - where. Где.
Common nouns:
Devushka - young woman. Девушка. Zhenshina - woman. Usually refers to a woman that is older or married. Женщина. Muzchina - Pronounced (Muzcheena) - man. Мужчина. Dom - house , home. Дом. Den'gi - money. Деньги. Lyubov' - (noun love) -Любовь. (Also common Russian female name) Vera - (noun faith , religion) - Вера. (Very common Russian woman's name) Hope - (noun hope) - Надежда. (Also common Russian female name)
Phrases: Ya tebya lyublyu - I love you. Russian: Я тебя люблю. To ask a question simple raise your voice at the end of the sentence: Ya tebya lyublyu ? - Do I love you ? Russian: Я тебя люблю ? Ne uchite menya zhit' - Literal translation: Do not teach me how to live my life. Implied: Mind your own business. Russian: Не учите меня жить. Dosvidan'ya - Good bye. Russian: До свидания
